Henkel was founded in 1876 by Fritz Henkel, a German businessman, and two other men, whose product was detergent. The headquarters was originally located in Aachen until 1878, when it was moved to Dusseldorf. In 1886, Henkel opened a branch in Austria, giving Henkel access to markets outside Germany.
